123 Complaints & Letter 1968-2013 602 N. Farms Rd Florence,MA 01062 February 23, 1968 Peter 1 McErlain Health Agent Board of Health City Hall 212 Main Street Northampton_MA 01060 Dear Peter: On behalf of the Single Site committee of the Interfaith Community Cot Shelter 1 want to thank you for taking the time to meet with us last week. It was extremely helpful to us in our efforts to find a site for next year. As our search continues, I will most certainly be in touch with you. We need all the help we can get,and want to make sure that our next site meets all the known requirements so that you and Tony will not be challenged at every step of the way. Many thanks for your support. Sincerely, Fu-&c e `ete) Yvonne Freccero Chair, Single Site Committee Educational Services Guests at the shelter are being able to access information and refer services, case support, housing, substance and mental health counseling, job and education resources. In addition to the on -site staff and volunteers providing some of these services outreach workers are on site weekly, bi-weekly or an as needed basis: DMH Mental Heald Outreach Worker- Mary Chandler, Mobile Resource Team Employment Specialist - Celia Miller, Family Planning along with outreach workers from Family.Planing Substance Marc Services, and the Veterans Community Care Center. . Why Are There are many root causes of homelessness but the most obvious an immediate is the lack of affordable housing. Twenty-five percent of the nation's homeless people hold down paying jobs while living on the street or in shelters. Despite the success of the stock market and the decrease of unemployment, the wage unskilled labor remain unchanged, at a time when the cost of living -and more significantly cost of housing is steadily climbing. A minimum-wage earner working 40 hours a week will earn less than $850 pre-tax a month. The guideline for rent is thirty percent of income, in th case no more than$255 per month. Advertised rents for 1-bedroom apartments in Northamp average $550 per month. The number of available Single Room Occupancy units have decreased and there are virtually no subsidized units available, nor can any further subsidies anticipated. A sudden illness, accident, or marital dispute may start a downward spiral ending in homelessness. With a waiting list for subsidized housing and a waiting list for the Grove Stre Inn where can a person find shelter? Picture someone struggling to put his life together after overcoming substance abuse, how can this life be stabilized on the streets? How can a success job interview be carried on without somewhere to shower, wash clothes, and get a good night': sleep? Shelter and encouragement are needed to begin the long climb back. This is what the Interfaith Community Emergency Cot Shelter provides, encouragement, a sense of being value support and professional help in identifying the resources available. Once their life is in order, many return to the shelter to share the comfort and support they obtained in the past. Other Ooo or tu= We are developing two other program components in conjunction with the Interfaith Community Cot Shelter. The first is a 4-part series sponsored by the Massachuset Coalition for the Homeless called Faith In Action Together(F.I.A.T) whose aim is to develop local networks of faith communities to train, organize and mobilize member to become advocates for solution to homelessness. We are having our third meeting on Tuesday, February 10th, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street, Northampton. The Interfaith Community Outreach- Mentor Program will conduct its first general training on Saturday, February 28th , 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. or over two evenings, Thursday, February 26th and Thursday, March 5th from 6:30- 9:00 p.m. This program provides an opportunity to become a mentor to a homeless or formerly homeless individual . For more information about either of these program, contact Rebecca Muller at 582-9505. Interfaith Community Cot Shelter Quarterly Report The winter emergency cot shelter got off to an intense start. The odor was very strong. I checked the moron area in the cellar where there are individual bays that appear to be rented. I iuld not find any smoking odor in that area. I then visited cretary owners. After talkingwith her it was apparent that she smoked id the odor was quite strong in her office. I suggested that she ask her employers if they was illegal for employees or add send a to nants to be smoe n king lthe work place. I also indicating it suggested that they CC the Northampton !oard of Health so that your office could be a help dealing with anyone whom may be cooking in there building. She indicated at that time that she would forward the uggestion to the owners. I received a call today from Dalila and she indicated that the moking has not stopped nor have they received a letter from the property ;onceming those activities taking place within there building. 1 would suggest that maybe you follow-up with a letter indicating that the uoperty owners take some hey could possibly be held responsible ble for providing for oa smoke activities ee work place.
