I am going to have one of our inspectors do an inspection and we will follow up with you. Please feel free to contact me any time for an update. Thank you, Memdith A. O'Leary, R.S. Dear Ms.O'Leary, I'm following upon a complaint I and a few others made last year regarding the amount of smoke pollution being emitted by Local Burger and other restaurants in downtown Northampton. The smoke levels on Strong Ave continue to be extremely high, and if we open our windows it just comes inside our apartment. Not a healthy living environment!Especially not for our 3 young kids(1 yr old twins and a 4 yr old). It's common for the entire street(and the nearby parts of Main St)to smell very strongly of hamburger smoke, especially during lunch and dinner(11 -3 pm and 5-midnight)-this is a lot of hours during the day! This is not just a smell nuisance-this type of smoke(particulate matter)is a known health hazard. I can supply papers from the scientific literature if you'd like(my job is in air pollution research after all!). I've attached a few photos' The daytime photo is of the stack from Siam Thai restaurant.Note that it is actually pointing down-toward the residences and the parking lot!Is this actually legal to have a smokestack pointing down, especially toward a mixed use area(business/residential)?This particular stack sometimes smells strongly of fried fish. The nighttime photo is of Local Burgers exhaust stack-I notice that this stack doesn't appear to have any exhaust controls on it?Most of the other restaurants'stacks have some sort of filtration unit installed. As for Local Burger, the amount of smoke coming from their stack seems much, much higher than all the other restaurants. I write to urge the city to address this unhealthy situation.
