Re: 118 Main Street, Northampton
Ms. Naegele, cr(f "5y'2;
On Friday, July 29, 1994, at the request of Laura Drnek, I inspected
the second floor apartment located at 118 Main St. which Ms. Drnek was in
the process of moving out of. She came into the office concerned about
possible code violations in the apartment.
The apartment has only one means of egress which is a violation of
Mass. Buildings Code CMR Article 8 section 809.2 minimum number of exits
required. The file for 118 Main Street contains permits taken out for
renovations to the bakery (1977) , alterations for office space (1978-79) ,
woodstove installation (1981) , alterations to existing bakery (1986) , sign
permit (1987) and lastly a permit for an air conditioning rack in 1988.
The file contains no permits taken out for construction or renovations to
the rental apartment located on the second floor.
The apartment located at 118 Main Street second floor is in violation
of the following State Building Codes:
1. Article 8 section 809.2 - Lack of second means of egress
2. Article 113.1 - Work performed without permits & change of use.
I am forwarding a copy of the file to the Board of Health to take
action to prevent risk of injury or loss of life to any possible tenant of
this apartment until the violations are corrected.
Truly yours,'

118 MAIN STREET, (2nd Floor Apt.), NORTHAMPTON
The Northampton Board of Health is in receipt of a report from Assistant
Building Commissioner Anthony Patillo, dated August 1, 1994 (copy attached),
which indicates that the second floor apartment in a building owned by you
at 118 Main Street, Northampton (assessor's map 32C, parcel lot 10) lacks a

Under authority of Chapter III, Section 127 of the Massachusetts General Law,
you are hereby ordered to provide a second means of egress which is in

being reoccupied. Do not rent the apartment until you have obtained a permit
from the Northampton Building Inspector to construct a second means of egress
at 118 Main Street and you have completed the installation of same and
obtained approval from the Northampton Building Inspector.
Please contact the Board of Health Office if you have any questions concerning
this matter.
