Merridith O'Leary<moleary@northamptonma.gov>, Daniel Wasiuk<dwasiuk @northamptonma gov> Hi Paul We get to ask you all the fun questions-any guidance about a Doggie Daycare moving into what was recently offices but before that a 3 bedroom house? It has a passed T5 from 2012 for 3BR;they propose to do grooming and boarding, and have one BR for overnight staff. I see Kennels/veterinary office under T5(50 gpd per kennel)and perhaps we can look at barber shop/beauty salon (whose customers have less hair, 100 gpd per seat). I believe they would compost the yard waste, but in hindsight that could add up(I asked for their business plan for numbers of animals proposed to serve). any help is appreciated! thanks Ed Edmund Smith Health Inspector Northampton Health Department 212 Main Street, Northampton MA 01060 (413)587-1339 Regular Schedule: Monday&Wednesday,8-4:30;Thursday 8-12 noon. Nietupski, Paul(DEP)<paul.nietupski @state.ma.us> Tue, Mar 4,2014 at 1200 PM To: Ed Smith<esmith @northamptonma.gov> Cc. Merridith O'Leary<moleary@northamptonma gay>, Daniel Wasiuk<dwasiuk@northamptonma.gov> Ed, The design flow for Kennels includes wash down and is the only design flow specified in 15.203 that would fit the Doggie Daycare. Having said that I've heard that a number of these type of operations have applied to Boston/DEP for an alternative design flow under 15.203(6),a BRP WP 70 Application;typically 200%of water meter readings. Given that the facility has a 330 gpd system, that only equates to 6 kennels (and that's not excluding the one bedroom for overnight staff)and I'm not sure how many dogs equals to a kennel. So the W P70 may be the only viable option. From a previous email from Ron White(the DEP Boston person who permits W P70s): "In order to determine flow they would need to define what the facility lay out is and what service(s)it provides." When I spoke with Andrea yesterday she indicated they also wanted to compost the doggie pooh. I've spoken to Dan Hall in DEP/SWM and he indicated he may have an answer as early as tomorrow as to the requirements for composting(e.g.whether it could be considered residential or a small composting operation). Although Andrea said they had no plans to,if they provide flea dips or other chemical treatments they need to go to an industrial holding tank. Stay tuned. Section 15.203 of Title 5 gives us guidance about various uses and their average demands on a septic can see Title 5 here: http://www.mass.govfeea/docs/dept service/regulations/310cmr15.pdf). Probably not more than 12 dogs over night during peak seasons(peak meaning only 2 months a year). We are also planning on providing kennel baths. For this reason I wanted to avoid using the septic system because Em sure this will over work the system and I'm looking into installing a gray water system. Dog feces will be handled by an on site composting system and/or a doggie dooley, which is basically a miniature septic system, if this gets approved. The facility has three 1/2 baths, with the hopes of installing I shower in the future. At no time should the staff on site at any one time, exceed 6-8 employees. As far as other Northampton Depts,we have already submitted to the Planning I of3 3/10/2014 12:42 PM City of Northampton Mail-241 Haydenville Road(ex.Girl Scout HQ)... https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=9954d8032f&view pt&s... I'm also sending you a picture and descriptions of what a doggie dooley is. Our intention is to install a similar system but on a larger scale, utilizing two fifty five gallon plastic drums, with a twenty foot drainage field. I will be looking for a contractor who is qualified in both retaining walls and septic systems,to perform all said work. In my last&mail I neglected to mention that all of the products we use will be environmentally friendly as we would like to keep our business as green as possible. Also,do you have anything to do with the gray drainage system I would like to install or would that be public works? Thanks again for your help.
