IBC CHAPTER 10 MEANS OF EGRESS
1003.5 Elevation change.Where changes in elevation of less than 12 inches(305 mm)exist in the means of
egress, sloped surfaces shall be used. Where the slope is greater than one unit vertical in 20 units horizontal (5-
percent slope), ramps complying with Section 1010 shall be used.Where the difference in elevation is 6 inches
(152 mm) or less, the ramp shall be equipped with either handrails or floor finish materials that contrast with
adjacent floor finish materials.
Exceptions:
1. A single step with a maximum riser height of 7 inches (178 mm) is permitted for buildings with occupancies in
Groups F, H, R-2, R-3, S and U at exterior doors not required to be accessible by Chapter 11.
"Exterior egress landing shall have a 7"max. rise at door.
1004.1 Design Occupant Load
1004.1.1 Residential areas,See table 1004.1.1

1006.1 Means of Egress Illumination Required: The means of egress, including the exit discharge, shall be
illuminated at all times that the building is occupied.
1006.3 Illumination Emergency Power: If power failure, emergency electrical system shall provide for the
following.
1. Aisles and stairways
2. Corridors and exit passageways
3. Exterior egress components
4. Exterior landings
1008.1.1 Doors Size: Required egress doors shall provide 32" clear.
**Will provide 36"new doors to the basement access.
** Section 104.10 Request for Modifications: Alternative to providing 32" clear opening doors from the 3 units.
The existing doors leafs in the rear of the building, from each of the units to the rear balconies and the exit stairs
are 32" wide. The work involves upgrading the doors to meet the fire resistance rating and separation
requirements for an egress. The doors currently have a half lite configuration and let light into the kitchens. The
upgraded doors are proposed to maintain the half lite configuration with fire rated, temperature rise assembly
with a 1 hour rating. The alternative involves installing 32" wide new fire doors instead of the required wider 36"
units. The Installation of 36" wide units would most likely involve re-structuring the new openings, possible
balloon framing alterations for 3 stories and changes to the interior of the units, trim cabinets and electrical.
1008.1.2 Door Swing: Doors may swing in any direction with occupant load less than 50,
1008.1.5 landings: Level on each side of egress door. Exception:2. Exterior doors as provided for in Section
1003.5,See above 1003.5
1008.1.7 Thresholds: %" max
1008.1.9 Hardware height: 34"—48"
1008.1.10 Panic Hardware: Not required in occupancy less than 50,
1009.1 Stairway Width:
Exceptions: 1.Stairways serving an occupant load of less than 50 shall have a width of not less than 36 inches
1009.2 Headroom: 80".
1009.4.2 Riser height and tread depth.Stair riser heights shall be 7 inches maximum and 4 inches minimum. The
riser height shall be measured vertically between the leading edges of adjacent treads. Rectangular tread depths
shall be 11 inches minimum.
1009.12 Handrails.Stairways shall have handrails on each side and shall comply with Section 1012.

degrees(3.14 rad),the building exterior walls within 10 feet(3048 mm) horizontally of a nonrated wall or
unprotected opening shall have a fire-resistance rating of not less than 1 hour. Openings within such exterior
walls shall be protected by opening protectives having a fire protection rating of not less than 3/4 hour. This
construction shall extend vertically from the ground to a point 10 feet (3048 mm)above the topmost landing of
