Re: Overhead storage support:
River Valley Market—Phase 2
330 North King Street
Northampton M.A. 01060
Mr. Jody Barker:
You have requested that I design a structural support system for two specific overhead storage
conditions located at the project indicated above. You have informed me that the intended use of the
proposed new overhead storage is for beer and wine storage.
1 have review the architectural drawings that you have provided me dated 9/4/15. The general
proposed overhead storage configuration consists of 4'-0" wide x 3'-2" deep x 2'-0"tall plywood
storage boxes. These storage boxes shall be placed upon a 3/a" plywood shelf and supported by "Hafele
287.45.495" steel brackets located above refrigerated storage. The bottom of the new storage boxes is
roughly 7'-6" above the finished floor.
Given the dimensions of the proposed storage boxes I estimate that the maximum loading
condition maybe (18) 12-bottle, 19 %"x 13" x 6 %" wood wine cases each weighing 40 pounds. This
results in a 200 pound per linear foot loading along the proposed new shelf assembly that will support
the new overhead storage boxes. Note that no additional items will be placed upon the top of the new
proposed storage boxes.
On September 15, 2015 I visited the address indicated above to observe the existing structure and
to discuss the new overhead storage requirements. This structure is conforms to type 2-b construction.
All new wood blocking and plywood associated with the new overhead storage assemblies will need to
be fire treated lumber.
The north elevation on sheet A-3 1 depicts 12 overhead storage boxes. These boxes shall be
supported by 16 gauge steel stud wall and 2x4 fire treated wood blocking. See the attached sketch SkI
for details. The east elevation on sheet A-302 depicts 4 overhead storage boxes. These storage boxes
shall be supported by 5 structural steel posts. See the attached sketches Sk2 andSk3 for details.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Respectfully, d
Jacob it gineering and Design W .

607 Energy Conservation:
See 711 below
701.3 Compliance
New electrical equipment must comply with section 708 Length of dead end corridors, comply with
705.6 Minimum ceiling height of newly created habitable and occupied spaces shall be greater than 8
feet.
704 Fire Protection: 704.2,912.2.1 Automatic sprinkler systems
Automatic sprinkler systems will be upgraded in the work area as needed.
705 Means of Egress
There will not be a reduction of means of egress in any part of the building.
705.7 Means of Egress lighting
Existing means of egress lighting will not be affected or changed by these renovations.
705.7 Exit Signs
Existing exit signage will not be affected or changed by these renovations.
711 and 607 Energy Conservation:
Level 1 alterations are permitted without requiring the entire building to comply with the International
Energy Conservation Code. Alterations (new construction) shall comply with the International Energy
Conservation Code. A building that undergoes Level 2 alterations is required to meet a certain level of
energy compliance.
Where there are reconfigurations of the space or new doors or windows, any such new element is
required to meet the International Energy Conservation Code. Elements within the building that are
not being affected do not heed to be evaluated and do not nee to comply with the energy provisions.
Essentially the entire building is not required to meet the energy provisions; only a degree of possible
improvement in the energy performance of the building is intended to be achieved by making the new
elements meet the IECC. In certain cases where the reconfiguration of the space might have resulted
in the creation of new spaces the newly created space should be evaluated as a whole for
compliance with the energy provisions even though some of the element within the space might
actually not have been altered. Likewise, in a case where an existing mechanical system is being
extended to other areas or new ductwork is being installed to reconfigure and reroute the ducts to
various spaces, it is only required to have the new elements meet the energy provisions and not the
entire system.
