Scope of project-
Build 22'x 13.5' car port on the NW side of the house over the existing asphalt driveway.
The carport is to be attached to the NW exterior wall of the existing house and supported by the
corner of the existing garage and three 8"x 8'tall round fiberglass columns.The new carport roof
will have three 4'x 9' Kalwall roof panels evenly spaced 30" apart.The roof of the carport will tie
into the existing garage roof.
Project specifications-
Remove tree roots from driveway area to allow for new pavement.
Roof-
2 x 8 KD spf rafters 16"on center.
3/2 x 8 KD spf laminated rafters to frame roof panel openings.
2 x 8 KD ledger attached tight to existing wall sheathing with 2 ledger lock screws into each
existing wall stud at 16"centers.
Rafters to be attached to a ledger using metal joist hangers with 1%"joist hanger screws.
Rafters to be attached to carrying beam using 12" metal straps.
5/8"5 ply CDX plywood roof sheathing nailed to the rafters every 12" on center along the length
of the rafters and 6" on center along the length of the ledger.
Snow and ice shield will be applied to the entire roof deck.
Finish roof to be asphalt shingles with metal roofing the width of the roof panels and extending
from the bottom of the roof panels to the edge of the roof.
Kalwall roof panels will be installed on a 2" curb,counter flashed to asphalt roof.
Roof support-
12"round concrete piers with#4 rebar supported on a 24" round footing 4' below grade.
8" round fiber glass columns,7' on center, will support a 6x6 laminated beam to which the
bottom of the rafters will attach with metal straps.
A%" steel cable will be attached to a eye bolt imbedded in the 12" concrete pier and to an eye
bolt through the 6 x 6 beam to create a positive attachment of the roof structure to the
concrete piers.

HOME OWNER EXEMPTION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The State of Massachusetts allows the homeowner the right under 780CMR 108.3.4 to act as his/her
construction supervisor. The state defines "Homeowner”as, " Person(s) who owns a parcel on which
he/she resides or intends to be, a one or two family dwelling, attached or detached structures
accessory to such use and/or farm structures. A person who constructs more than one home in a two-
year period shall not be considered a home owner."
The building department for the City of Northampton wants any person(s)who seek to use the home
owner exemption, to act as their own construction supervisor, to be aware that by doing so you
become responsible for compliance with state building codes and regulations. The inspection
process requires that the building department be called to inspect work at various stages, which include
foundation/footings (before backfill), sonotube holes (before pour), a rough building inspection
(before work is concealed), insulation inspection (if required) and a final building inspection.
The building department requires these inspections before the work is concealed, failure to secure
these inspections can result in failure to obtain a certificate of occupancy until the work can be
inspected.
If the homeowner hires other trades to perform work (electrical, plumbing & gas) the homeowner will be
responsible to make sure that the trades hired secure their proper permits in conjunction to the building
permit issued, and that they get their required inspections. Failure of the individual trades to secure
the permits and inspections as required can DELAY the project until such time as the proper permits
and inspections are made
