GARAGE
A RAIN GARDEN COLLECTS RUNOFF FROM
DRIVE, HOLDS FOR INFILTRATION AND THEN
SPILLS INTO A VEGETATED SWALE
RUNOFF IN THE ENTRY YARD IS CAUGHT IN A YARD DRAIN AND
OUTLETS AWAY FROM THE HOUSE TO THE NORTH
STEPS LEAD FROM THE UPPER
DRIVE TO THE FRONT DOOR
AN EMBANKMENT, BEGINNING 2 FT. FROM THE DRIVE
EDGE, BRINGS GRADE DOWN TO THE EXISTING
ELEVATION QUICKLY. MAXIMUM SLOPE OF THE BANK IS
1:1 (100%, OR A 45% ANGLE). THE DASHED LINES
INDICATED THE EXTENT OF THE BANK.
THE DRIVE WIDENS TO 16 FT., PROVIDING AN
EASY AND GRACIOUS CURVE IN THE DRIVE AND
ALLOWING DELIVERY TRUCKS TO USE THE UPPER
DRIVE AS A PULL-OFF.
A VEGETATED SWALE RUNS ALONG THE DRIVE, CATCHING RUNOFF
FROM THE SLOPE DOWN FROM THE ROAD AND FROM THE DRIVE
A VEGETATED SWALE RUNS ALONG THE
GARAGE AND DRIVE. WHATEVER RUNOFF
DOES NOT INFILTRATE IS CAUGHT IN A
DRAIN THAT OUTLETS TO THE RAIN GARDEN.
THE GARDEN (FOR EDIBLES AND/OR
ORNAMENTALS), CONSISTS OF A MORE
LEVEL AREA WITH A LANDING AND PATH
BEHIND, THEN ANOTHER BED RISES AT 1:2
(50%) WITH A SECOND LEVEL PATH BEHIND.
A VEGETATED SWALE CATCHES RUNOFF FROM THE
BANK AND BRINGS IT TO THE DRIVEWAY SWALE. THE
SWALE WIDENS AT THIS JUNCTURE AND INCLUDES A
GRAVEL PAD TO DIFFUSE HIGHER VELOCITY FLOW
A PIECE OF SCULPTURAL WALL CURVES AND RISES. THE
WALL HEIGHT RISES FROM 18" ABOVE THE PATH TO 42"
ABOVE THE PATH. THIS HEIGHT ALLOWS THE FEATURE TO
BE EASILY VIEWED FROM THE BEDROOM.
A MOUND RUNS ALONG THE ROAD TO AID
IN SCREENING THE ROAD AND KEEP RUNOFF
IN THE GRAVEL SWALE
A GRAVEL SWALE MANAGES RUNOFF FROM THE
ROAD. RUNOFF WILL SLOW DOWN AND SOME WILL
INFILTRATE. THE REMAINDER WILL SPILL OUT ONTO
THE BANK, PAST THE MOUND.
WATERBARS SHOULD BE INSTALLED EVERY 5-7'
ALONG STEEP SECTIONS OF THE SWALE
VEGETABLE BEDS, 4'X6.'
THE ENTRY INTO THE SIDE YARD IS PINCHED TO 8 FT,
ALLOWING MORE GROWING SPACE, MORE PRIVACY FROM
THE ROAD, AND SCREENING TO THE DRIVE.
