The design was created to address safety issues of the existing driveway while minimizing environmental
impact. Rerouting the driveway to the southwest increases sight lines at the road while reducing the
maximum slope to 5%. The design involves removal of a stand of trees west of the house to make way
for the regraded driveway. An embankment beginning 2' from the new driveway edge brings grade down
to the existing elevation quickly to minimize the impact of fill. The choice of a gravel driveway will minimize
the impervious surface area. A mound runs along the road to the north of the driveway to intercept runoff
in a gravel swale. The old driveway area is regraded to a more gradual, uniform, and vegetated slope.
A series of vegetated swales will intercept and infiltrate road runoff. A rain garden along the east side of
the driveway will collect runoff from the drive.
This 3.5 acre site is densely wooded over its entirety with appox. 0.33 acre clearing along Kennedy
road. Current access to the property is via a short, very steep driveway with a maximum gradient of
25% along road frontage and poor visibility to the north. The sloping terrain concentrates runoff north
and south of the driveway. Two intermittent streams flow onto the property; the one to the south, which
intersects the southern boundary of the property and flows north east, would potentially be impacted
by this project.

C. Project Description (cont.)
b. Identify provisions of the Wetlands Protection Act or regulations which may exempt the applicant
from having to file a Notice of Intent for all or part of the described work (use additional paper, if
necessary).
3. a. If this application is a Request for Determination of Scope of Alternatives for work in the
Riverfront Area, indicate the one classification below that best describes the project.
Single family house on a lot recorded on or before 8/1/96
Single family house on a lot recorded after 8/1/96
Expansion of an existing structure on a lot recorded after 8/1/96
Project, other than a single family house or public project, where the applicant owned the lot
before 8/7/96
New agriculture or aquaculture project
Public project where funds were appropriated prior to 8/7/96
Project on a lot shown on an approved, definitive subdivision plan where there is a recorded deed
restriction limiting total alteration of the Riverfront Area for the entire subdivision
Residential subdivision; institutional, industrial, or commercial project
Municipal project
District, county, state, or federal government project
Project required to evaluate off-site alternatives in more than one municipality in an
Environmental Impact Report under MEPA or in an alternatives analysis pursuant to an
application for a 404 permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or 401 Water Quality
Certification from the Department of Environmental Protection.
b. Provide evidence (e.g., record of date subdivision lot was recorded) supporting the classification
above (use additional paper and/or attach appropriate documents, if necessary.)

The design minimizes impact within the 100' buffer of the intermittent stream. The plan involves conversion
of impervious surfaces on a steep slope that concentrates road runoff to vegetated surfaces designed to
intercept and infiltrate runoff (310 CMR 10.02(2)(b)2.f). Critically, this design addresses a life safety issue
by moving the driveway entrance downslope to a location with better sight lines to passing traffic.
