Per your inspection and layout plan, the roof areas that will support the solar panels are: 1. Western Roof: 2x 10 rafters spaced at 16" on center with 12'horizontal span from bearing wall to ridge. 2. Front Center Area: 2x6 rafters spaced at 16" on center with 13'continuous horizontal span from bearing wall to ridge with load bearing support wall at T from outside wall. 3. Rear Center Area: 2x 10 rafters spaced at 24" on center with 8'horizontal span from bearing wall to ridge. 4. Middle Center Area(reverse gable between front and rear center roofs): 2x 10 rafters spaced at 24" on center with 8'horizontal span from bearing wall to ridge. All of the above roof areas are sloped at a 6:12 pitch. The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Building Code snow map indicates the design ground snow load in Northampton is 55 pounds per square foot(psf), which translates to a flat roof snow load of 38.5psf.The dead load of the rafters/sheathing/shingles is approximately 10 psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of 14 psf and overall total load of 52.5 psf. For this evaluation, it was assumed the wood members are typical spruce-pine-fir mix, No.2 or better. Our calculations indicate that the rafters in Area 1 (western roof)are stressed to 55%of their total bending capacity under the code- required snow load in combination with the existing dead loads and the new solar panels. The rafters in Areas 2 and 3 are stressed to less than 40% of their allowable capacities under the full design load. Therefore it is my opinion the new solar panels can be installed in the proposed areas without reinforcement of the existing framing. The above recommendations and opinions are based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members are in sound condition.Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must be immediately brought to our attention.
