No "clash" occurred, as suggested by the glaring headline. The tenants in the building had a meeting and agreed to send a letter. The letter stated: "the tenants at 221 Pine Street are committed to working in a cooperative manner with building management as well as with city officials to maintain a harmonious and safe work environment for all." In the interview with your reporter, I specifically told him that this was not an "us against them" situation. Although tenants had legitimate concerns about the manner in which the matter was handled, I specifically stated that our approach to resolving any issues would be to have an open dialogue and better communication. I stated that I believed that part of the problem stemmed from a fundamental misunderstanding about the nature of an artist's studio. The studio is an intensely personal space. Long hours are involved, which may extend late into the night, especially if the artist works another job or has family obligations. The artist may cook, eat, nap, entertain, collaborate with other artists, meditate, exercise or do yoga in his or her studio. These activities are all perfectly legal in the studios as long as an artist does not make the studio his residence and he complies with safety regulations. As it turns out, almost all of the artists were able to prove that they had permanent residences elsewhere. The news article also failed to point out that this small fire was out and any potential danger was over in about seven minutes.
