The chimney does not meet the strict requirements of 780 CMR 3610.4.7.1, as two wood columns are in contact with the corners of the chimney. However, upon my suggestion, an air space will be constructed in both sides of the firebox, and low and high vents inserted to allow a convection forced air circulation within the masonry cavity. This construction will serve to cool the masonry face. It is my opinion, based upon my training and experience as a professional engineer, that this design will prevent the possibility of dangerously high temperatures at the point of wood contact.
