ceiling and roof structure, and installingacertain, dormerslat the rearnoffther

I can approve the remodeling plan as shown by Mr. Beatt y,

joists." It should be noted that the second story space will be prepared ial
is
structurally designed to accommodate occupancy at a future date.

Re: Residence Remodeling E.D. Prontowitz and D.R. Gueydan
965 Ryan Road, Northampton, Massachusetts
To Whom It May Concern:
This is to certify that I have today visited the site of a dwelling located
at 965 Ryan Road, Northampton, Massachusetts, which structure is to be remodeled
and otherwise repaired.
I can offer as follows:
' 1. I visited the site on June 7, 1994, in company with Mr. Joseph Beatty,
,. architectural designer of the project.
r 2. In my visit and inspection, I noted a failure in the rear foundation
wall which caused the rear wall to bow into the building about
6 inches.
3. The foundation wall appears to be 8-inch concrete block construction,
which I estimate to be about 40 years old.
4. Except the bowing into the building failure, the foundation, including
footing and concrete floor slab, appear to be sound.
5. At the rear of the first floor, there appears to be a failure at the
ceiling level near the center of the house.
6. In the attic there appears to be a distortion of the roof structure,
which is supported by 2-inch by 6-inch rafters, 24 inch on center.
7. The ridge line shows a measure of distortion in horizontal alignment.
In light of my inspection, it is my opinion that the failure in the founda-
tion wall was due to excessive pressure of frost action caused by inadequate
drainage in the rear of the dwelling. The roof failure was a result of distor-
tion of the back wall foundation, reflecting the bowing of the rear wall and
inadequate support of the excessive snow load.
In conversation with Mr. Beatty, he has assured me that failures in the
present structure will be adequately addressed in the remodeling program.
