3. Record the time that Simplex calls your facility
4. Record the time that apparatus arrives in front
of your building.
It is my belief that through these consistent actions we will eliminate
service delays, provide a new source of comparative documentation and find the
source of our previous frustration. Please contact me with any questions.

Dear Mansour:
Secondary to receiving your December 21, 2001 letter, I have contacted
Simplex in an effort to uncover the source of this frustrating and elusive problem
that you reference. I have verified with both our dispatch center and Deputy
Chief Hurley that from the time the alarm in question was received until fire
department units were on location at 36 King Street was an elapsed time of four
minutes. Unfortunately, this does not help to resolve the response time
discrepancy that exists.
Therefore, I have asked Jim Anderson from Simplex to provide full
documentation from their Central Station. I would also suggest the following
action:
• Periodically test the alarm system with the assistance of fire
department personnel. Through this procedure the time from the
alarm activation to dispatch center notification.
• Instruct your staff to follow the sequential actions listed below:
1. Record the time that the alarm sounds.
2. Dial 911; tell the dispatcher that the fire alarm
is sounding and read the information displayed
on the annunciator panel.

As you can see from the above time frames, there is a discrepancy. This discrepancy has been
consistent from the beginning of the system installment. If you recall, the hotel went through
installation of secondary phone lines directly to the fire station to remedy this problem. Unfortunately,
after spending a lot of money and time, this problem remains unsolved. Please understand, this is a
hotel and I cannot afford to have any discrepancies between the " fire alarm sound" and the "fire
department notification." I expect Simplex and the Northampton Fire Department to investigate jointly
and rectify this problem once and for all. Considering eleven (11) minutes of alarm sound and the
safety of Hotel guests in a real emergency in absolutely unacceptable.
If you need any further information, please call me directly at (413) 587-8100. I am ready for
whatever it takes to correct this problem. If you have all the necessary information, please inform me
of the progress towards solving the above concern.
Sincerely,
