INVENTORY FORMB CONTINUATION SHEET [NORTHAMPTON] [281 PROSPECT STREET] MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Area(s) Form No. 220MORRISSEY BOULEVARD, BOSTON,MASSACHUSETTS 02125 Continuation
sheet 1 NTH.273 ___ Recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. If checked, you must attach a completed National Register Criteria Statement form. Use as much
space as necessary to complete the following entries, allowing text to flow onto additional continuation sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate
the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The red brick Hurley House is an uncommon form of the Tudor Revival. It has a roof that is meant
to suggest a English thatched roof that folds down below the eaves level. In asphalt rather than thatch, the roof is a copper-trimmed, pyramidal hipped roof with a front-hipped dormer.
The house has a wing on the west elevation two bays wide and four bays deep and an ell on the north north elevation. The main block of the house has an entry porch. A granite watertable
encircles the house and unites the various sections. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of
the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “This large brick house was built during the mid 1920’s on the corner of Adare Place,
which was laid out during the same period through the Maloney estate on Prospect Street. The first known owner and occupant of this house was James Hurley, the president of the Brookside
Dairy, which was located on Hawley Street in Northampton. Mr. Hurley is listed here in the 1930 directory.” BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Beers, F. W. County Atlas of Hampshire Massachusetts,
