INVENTORY FORMB CONTINUATION SHEET [NORTHAMPTON ] [217 Prospect Street] MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Area(s) Form No. 220MORRISSEY BOULEVARD, BOSTON,MASSACHUSETTS 02125 Continuation
sheet 1 NTH. ___ Recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. If checked, you must attach a completed National Register Criteria Statement form. Use as much space
as necessary to complete the following entries, allowing text to flow onto additional continuation sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics
of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is an enlarged version of a Craftsman Bungalow being two-and-a-half rather than one-and-a-half stories in height.
It is a front-dormer bungalow, which is a common form, but what is uncommon is the fact that the dormer is one-and-a-half stories in height. The steeply pitched, side-gable roof extends
to first story level on the west façade where it is supported on Craftsman style, H-form, paired posts. The house is two bays wide and three deep and has a center chimney. It is perhaps
unique in Northampton. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s)
the owners/occupants played within the community. By 1919 this house was occupied by William and Rose Stevens and Mrs. Stevens’ mother Kate Langdon, a widow. William worked as a ticket
agent at the steam railroad station. The Stevens also were caring for their 3 ½ year old niece. John Gilligan was in the house in 1930. Gilligan worked as a knitter in a hosiery mill.
He was in the house through 1940. This was a neighborhood of Irish and Scottish immigrants many of whom worked either in the hosiery mill or on the railroad. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES
