Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a two-and-a-half story Federal style home under a side gabled roof. The house is five bays wide and two bays deep. The front façade has a recessed front entry with wide trabeated surround and three-quarter length sidelights. The southern elevation of the home has a narrow Federal style door with narrow trabeated surround that encloses a two light transom. Windows on this house are six over six sash except for a small two over two sash window in each side gable, and the second story façade windows meet the eaves line. Windows have basic architrave surrounds. The house has a one story rear ell on the southern elevation and a one-and-a-half story ell on the northern elevation. On the northern elevation of the home is a shallow oriel. The house has two interior brick chimneys. Interior remodeling occurred between 2006 and 2007. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1970: “Roger Bartlett was among the first settlers of Northampton in 1654. He established his homestead on Pleasant St., served as a selectman in 1657 and 1653 and was killed in 1675 in an assault by the Indians. The homestead was maintained until the late 18th century and Preserved Bartlett, born in 1772, was probably one on the last last of the family to be born there. In 1792, probably at the time of his marriage Preserved removed to South St. and established his homestead on this site. He lived here for 53 years, until he died at the age of 77 in 1845. The property remained in the Bartlett family until the death of Preserved’s great-granddaughter Mary in 1926.” Carolyn P. Wright and Agnes W. Howland owned the house in 1970.
