Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This two-and-a-half story row house is in a form that was used a number of times in Northampton for multi-family housing. It has a low, hipped roof on which are hipped roof dormers on east and west elevations and two cross-gable bays on the south façade set between three, shed-roofed porches. The south façade has three-sided bays at each end below shallow polygonal roofs to complete the composition. Unlike some of the other row houses, this building has lost much of its original appearance by the addition of vinyl siding and vinyl replacement windows. It has high brick foundations and an asphalt shingled roof. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “Graves Avenue was laid out in 1884 through the Graves homestead on Market Street. The street was quickly developed and by 1895, fourteen of the present fifteen structures had been erected. All were residential and they spanned the range of building types. The Gazette called this ‘our most citified street’ because of the double houses and row housing lining both sides of the street.” BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Beers, F. W.
