sections must be justified here. This property would contribute to an expanded Fort Hill Historic District. The Fort Hill National Register Historic District was designated in 1989 with
seven properties along South Street. The boundaries of an expanded National Register Historic District would encompass residential/institutional side streets laid out on the east side
of South Street between Old South Street on the north and the southern boundary of Cedar Street on the south and a western boundary of South Street. This potential historic district
is significant according to criteria A and C and would have local significance. These residential streets are significant according to criterion A for their reflection of development
in Northampton from the mid 18th century through the early 1900s. Residential development began along South Street in the mid 1700s with the establishment of gentleman’s estates. By
the mid 1800s, the orginal property owners began subdividing their land which opened up development opportunities east of South Street. These new neighborhoods housed Northampton’s growing
middle class and this pattern of development continued to the early 1900s. Architecturally this area of Northampton is significant for the range of First Period, Georgian, Federal, Gothic
Revival, Italianate, Stick Style, Queen Anne Shingle, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman style homes, for its institutional South Street School in the High Victorian Gothic style and Colonial
Revival Style Lathrop Home for the Aged and Infirm Women. The Egyptian Revival Style 18 Cedar Street adds to the variety of this potential district. Overall, the potential district has
integrity of workmanship, design, feeling, association, and materials.
