Planned Use The proposal is to renovate Cutter and Ziskind Houses to correct deficiencies and bring the buildings up to meet current building codes. Work on the exterior has been reviewed and approved by the Smith College Campus Planning Committee and is planned so as to not change the architectural appearance of the building. The intent is to maintain the aesthetics of the original design to the greatest extent possible. Detailed Project Information Historic, Central Business Architecture Description: The interiors will be renewed and refurbished. Each dorm will have an internal elevator added. Student rooms and public core spaces will be renovated. MEP systems will be modernized and life safety systems will be updated. The entire exterior envelope will be refurbished to match existing. Existing painted aluminum panels will be refurbished or replaced in kind. Aluminum window walls will be replaced with insulating units to match existing profiles. Membrane roofing will be replaced. A portion of the one story dining room roof will receive a planted roofing system. New concrete accessible entry ramps are proposed for exterior access to the courtyard and the main entrances. The exterior brick facade is in good condition and will remain as is. Not included with this request for staff review are: demolition of the exterior wood sided addition on the back of the building, that houses a walk -in cooler, an infill addition under the front overhangs at the outside corners of Cutter and Ziskind that will require the removal of the iron security gates and proposed solar panels for the main roofs of the two dorms.
