Existing Use
Cutter and Ziskind Houses are dormitories that house approximately 160 students and are connected by
a shared dining hall and kitchen.
Planned Use
The proposal is to renovate Cutter and Ziskind Houses to correct deficiencies and bring the buildings up
to meet current building codes. Work on the exterior has been reviewed and approved by the Smith
College Campus Planning Committee and is planned so as to not change the architectural appearance of
the building. The intent is to maintain the aesthetics of the original design to the greatest extent possible.
Detailed Project Information
Historic, Central Business Architecture Description: The interiors will be renewed and refurbished.
Each dorm will have an internal elevator added. Student rooms and public core spaces will be renovated.
MEP systems will be modernized and life safety systems will be updated. The entire exterior envelope
will be refurbished to match existing. Existing painted aluminum panels will be refurbished or replaced
in kind. Aluminum window walls will be replaced with insulating units to match existing profiles.
Membrane roofing will be replaced. A portion of the one story dining room roof will receive a planted
roofing system. New concrete accessible entry ramps are proposed for exterior access to the courtyard
and the main entrances. The exterior brick facade is in good condition and will remain as is. Not
included with this request for staff review are: demolition of the exterior wood sided addition on the
back of the building, that houses a walk -in cooler, an infill addition under the front overhangs at the
outside corners of Cutter and Ziskind that will require the removal of the iron security gates and
proposed solar panels for the main roofs of the two dorms.
