Existing Use
The existing building first floor has been used for a cafe and the upper floor for apartments and office
space. The building is currently abandoned.
Planned Use
Smith College is currently working with its consultants on a Strategic Plan for the property at 66 Green
Street. The building will be demolished and the foundation back filled. Current planning will look at
both the area of the building footprint and parking lot behind it to determined the final layout for parking
and green space in that area. The following is an excerpt from Smith notices to the public concerning
long terms plans for the 66 Green Street property.
"The building at 66 Green Street was formerly owned by Housing and Economic Resources for Women
(HER, Inc.), a non - profit affordable housing organization, which functioned as the Cafe's landlord. In
addition to the Cafe, the building contained some 15 single -room occupancy housing units. Although 66
Green Street is not within the footprint for Ford Hall, it is a property Smith had been arranging to
acquire from HER, Inc., for possible long -term expansion. In February 2007, Smith acquired 66 Green
Street in exchange for building a new and enhanced affordable housing development for HER, Inc., at
180 Earle Street."
Detailed Project Information
Historic Demolition Description: The building at 66 Green Street is located in an area that has been
identified for long term expansion of the college. Smith College acquired the building in 2007 and does
not have records about its date of construction. The City Assessors office lists date of construction at
1900. It has Victorian styling, though much of the front elevation has been changed by a previous
owner.
