Attachment A - Acquisition History.pdf 76 | 5.1: Permanently Protected any mortared monument would require a foundation, its design would need to be reviewed by the Massachusetts Historical Commission, which would require an archaeological survey and/or excavation to mitigate the impact of the foundation excavation on the burial ground. Erecting a sign would involve the least amount of excavation and archaeological investigation to prevent disturbance to burials. It is recommended that any memorial be placed near the road to minimize disturbance to burials. Th e Northampton State Hospital Memorial Committee suggested the memorial could include material from old buildings at the Northampton State Hospital that are being torn down. Th e Community Builders and MassDevelopment, the master developers, have salvaged some materials from the state hospital demolition, including bricks and other materials. It is strongly recommended that haying be conducted only when the ground is completely dry. Th e Department of Agricultural Resources agreed to draw up a regulation to this eff ect for the Smith Vocational School. Further archaeological reconnaissance and subsurface testing such as resistivity testing are recommended to identify the boundaries of the cemetery and map the soil defl ations and vegetation indicating burials. Further archaeological reconnaissance in the area might also locate small-unmarked gravestones of the types Mr. Mielke found on the burial ground in his childhood. Further documentary research is recommended to fi nd the cemetery plot records and map that Mr. Mielke saw years ago at the Northampton State Hospital.
