2. a. Work Description (use additional paper and /or provide plan(s) of work, if necessary):
The proposed work consists of installing a six inch water main (for Fire Sprinkler System) within the
southerly driveway to the MassDOT Administration Building. All excavation work associated with the
water main installation will be performed within the existing curblines. The curbs lining both sides of the
driveway have a reveal of approximately 7 inches. Open trench excavation will be performed in
accordance with the current Northampton Water Department Standards for water line installation.
The bituminous concrete pavement will be sawcut, excavated and removed from the site. Two parallel
pavement cuts, T -6" apart will delineate the limits of the trench. Pavement and soil will be removed to the
specified depth (aprox. 4' -5'). Spoil piles will be located adjacent to the trench, but within the limits of the
curblines of the driveway (Please refer to to the Utility Limits Map for the limits of work). Upon completion
of the pipe installation, the trench will be backfilled using the existing excavated spoils, compacted per
Department standards and then resurfaced with HMA. The driveway will be swept clean of any /all debris
and sediment. The two existing catch basins shall be protected with silt sacks or other form of protection
such as filter fabric, to prevent sediment from entering the system. Any potential groundwater
encountered during excavation shall be pumped to a silt bag or sedimentation basin, to be placed within
the upland lawn area as shown on the plans. Discharge will then flow though the lawn area in order to
provide additional treatment. As necessary, Mulch Filter Tubes can be installed as additional erosion
control measures behind the northerly sidewalk and along the southerly curbline. The work shall be
scheduled so as to aviod any rain event. There is no proposed grading, slope work, or drainage work as
Dart of this Droiect.
