Bruce Kriviskey opened the hearing on the request by Thomas Douglas Architects
for review of proposed building modifications at 57-59 Center St, Northampton Map Id 31B-
267.
Tom Douglas distributed partial survey showing the rear property boundaries of the subject
parcel and an historic survey. He noted he was asking for approval of two different scenarios.
One included expansion to the rear of the property line if the zoning were to change to allow a 0’
rear setback, the other would be to the 15’ setback.
He described the project that would connect the two existing buildings with a structure between
that would be tied together with a similar banding above the first floor.
Aelan Tierney asked about building a second story.
Douglas noted the requirement for an elevator is prohibitive.
Kriviskey asked about tying colors together.
Aelan Tierney suggested that the windows proposed for the “Circa” building (1-story garage
building) should be broken up to match those proposed on the other structures.
There was no public comment.
Douglas called out the proposed HVAC boxes to the rear of the “infill” one-story addition.
Aelan Tierney asked why they weren’t considering demoltion given the work involed.
Douglas noted that the project began as a renovation and the client’s wanted to keep the existing
massing.
Upon motion by Joe Blumenthal and second by Barry Steeves, the Committee voted
unanimously to close the hearing.
Joe Blumenthal noted the vast improvement to downtown that this project would bring.
Upon motion by Joe Blumenthal and second by Aelan Tierney, the Committee voted
unanimously to approve the project for either scenario with the condition that the window
rhythm be carried across the entire façade of the project and that a door could be located in one
window opening of the “Circa” building. Project would also include gooseneck lighting as
shown in the presentation.
6:40 PM. Adjourned.
