Northampton State Hospital
History
•Built in 1856 for the sole purpose of
treating and housing the mentally ill from
western Massachusetts
•Facility served over 2,000 patients and
employed over 500 people
•Grounds encompassed over 538 acres
•1977-1993 Patients discharged to
community based settings, the hospital was
closed, and land resources redistributed
•30 acres for a new Hampshire County jail

•282 acres transferred to the Dept. of Food and
Land Disposition Process
Agriculture as farmland / open space
•1994 -Legislation established goals for
•70 acres transferred to City for open space,
disposition and designated a Citizen Advisory
