1. Minutes approved.
2. Projection of a tape recording of the presentation of the House Dating
Project over WHMP Forward Northampton by Dorothy Chapin and Tom Dyer.
3. House Dating Project - Procedures. A copy of the direction which
will be given interested house owners is attached to these minutes.
Some interest has already been expressed by house owners.'
4. Clark Chapel - Decision postponed after discussion because of legal
questions and reluctance to destroy the building. The committee will
report at the next meeting. The Committee appointed by the Mayor:
Cecil Clark, Gordon Clark, Ralpi James Parsons. The history of
the Chapel written by James Parsons has been taped and was projected
at the meeting.
5. Bus Stops: Presentation by Bob Manz. Decision postponed for lack
of dimensions and details specific to Northampton.
A more accurate design will be presented at a later meeting.

Meeting: February 2, 1988
PRESENT: Barrett, Bowman, Chapin, C. Clark, G. Clark, Clausing, Dyer,

1. Corrected to delete Ralph Levy in entry #4 and approved.
2. With the approval of the Commission, the Chairman has written a letter
to the State Director of Finance in support of an application for funds
to renovate the Academy of Music.
3. House Dating Project: Letters of interest have been received. The
City of Holyoke is interested in a similar project

Suggestions for awards should be presented at the March meeting.

j 6. Thornes Market Elevator: The Commission voted to support an pplication.
for a variance of elevator equipment provided that :no threat to
the public safety is involved.
7. Clark Chapel: With regret, the Chapel.Committee has recommended that the
� building be removed. The committee will meet on the site at
4:00 PM on Tuesday, February 9th to consider salvage of the marble.
The Commission is invited to attend. A decision upon a suitable
memorial will be made at a later date.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, 1988.

This letter will, I hope, describe what we will do at our
preservation awards ceremony at 2 POMEROY TERRACE at 4 PPI,
WEDNESDAY, MAY 11. (For those of you were not at the
April 5 meeting, this is a change of date.)
What follows is a list of buildings that will get awards.
I have indicated the buildings' owners and I have noted who
will make the - award. If anyone has a problem with his /her_
assignment, please notify me immediately You will see that I
still need people to make some presentations, and I need _to
find these people fast. Please call to volunteer, or be pre-
pared to volunteer at our May 3 meeting.

ALSO, at the ceremony on May 11, Tom Dyer will arrange for
Martha Ferrante to receive a certificate and a placque as the
first house owner to research her home's date. She lives at
48 Meadow St., Florence.

1. The minutes were approved.
2. Membership: the Commission accepted with regret the resignations of
Emmy Clausing and Lisa Reitzes.
3. Awards: the Commission acknowledged with thanks, Ralph Levy for lettering
the awards; Paul Britt for being host to the ceremony.
4. Clark Chapel: the building was demolished. 50% of the marble will be saved
for a memorial on the site.
5. National Register: a list will be made of the buildings in Northampton
which are on the register.
The Fort Hill District has.been approved. Confirmation from
Washington is expected in two months.
6. Old Post Office building: the facade is protected by the National Register
7. Cracker Barrel Alley: the Planning Department has referred the proposal
for a mural to the Design Review Committee. The Historical
Commission will review since this area is in the National
Register District. The Commission will consult with the
Massachusetts Historical Commission.
8. Greek Revival Houses in Northampton: the Historical Society has referred a
request for a list of such houses to the Commission. Emmy
Clausing will make up a list.
9. Next meeting: August 2, 1988

3. The Massachusetts Historical Commission has voted to include
the Fort Hill District in the State Register of Historic
Districts, and recommends it for review to the National
Register of Historic Places.
4. Crackerbarrel Alley Mural: The Massachusetts Historical
Commission referred the matter to local jurisdiction. The
Northampton Historical Commission voted to oppose locating
the mural on the wall abutting Main Street and in the
Historic District.
5. Baptist Church Building: Question whether it is in the Main
Street Historic District.

1. The minutes of the last meeting were approved.
2. Clark Chapel: The Committee finds that a memorial plaza is
beyond the means available. Bergeron and McNulty will act as a
sub - committee to pursue plans for a memorial plaque.
3. Old Post Office Building: The owners were refused a Variance
to build a third floor. They will sue to change the decision.
4. Main Street Billboard: The billboard has been taken down. A
pedestrian walkway will be constructed for access to the old
Depot area.
5. Baptist Church: The church is.in_ the Historic District. It
^ i is of historic significance, and in a position vital to the city
street - scape. The interior additions of poor design and quality
are of less importance. Preservation of the building for a
Coolidge Memorial, or for additional facilities for the arts are
being explored, and grants proposed.
6. Civil War Cannon: The cannon, once mounted before a cottage
on Lake Damon in Chesterfield, was sold to an antique dealer and
re -sold to a museum (unnamed). Allison Lockwood will explore a
proposal to secure a replica.
7. Memorial Hall: The City has applied for grants to repair the
roof. The City Property Committee is working on problems of
safety; exits, fire escapes which impede the use of the building.
8. Awards: The following buildings will be considered: The
Clark Avenue Condominiums, 43 Beacon Street, and 19 Trumbull
Road.

grant money to support the Library.
4. City Ordinance for protection of Historic Buildings; The
Design Review Committee is formulating criteria and writing
an ordinance for Northampton.

Minutes, December 6, 1988 Meeting
Present: Chapin, C. Clark, G. Clark, Dyer, Gage, Lewis, Lincoln,
Parker and Stephens.
Ex Officio: Berkley
Absent: Barret - Watson, Bowman, Kiteley, Lockwood, and Watson.
1. Minutes approved with the addition of Ralph Gage present at the
November 1 meeting.
2. Award suggestions: Peloton glass building, Button Street
New Building next to Armory, 129 King Street
Country Store, Main Street, Florence
3. Criteria and Classification of Awards - a new award for enhancing
the street - scape.
4. Coolidge Library: A committee, which includes Paul Walker,
Michael Ahearn and others, is researching an available solution
and funds for the Library.
5. Cultural Plan: The Arts Council is in search of space. The
Council will be enlarged. Is the Baprist Church a viable choice?
