The Chairman introduced John Bowman newly appointed associate member of the Commission. 2. The Chairman appointed the following Committee on plans for the observa- tion of Preservation Week: Clausing Chairman, Reitzes, G. Clark. 3. The Chairman has submitted a budget of $600 for Commission funds in 1985 fiscal year. She urged members to attend the hearing on the City Budget. 4. A letter from Helen Searing to Mayor Musante was forwarded to the Histor- ical Commission. Ms. Searing proposes an adoptation of the facade of the Nonotuck Bank SIS building to make it compatible with the Main Street District. The Mayor and the Historical Commission support such a proposal, The Chairman will write Ms. Searing. 5. Emmy Clausing reported that Joan Wiegle has completed the nomination for that extension of the Fain Street District to Market and Hawley Street. Ex- officio: Brooks, Brabeck. 1. The minutes were corrected to include the name of Tom Dyer to the Committee on Preservation Week. 2. The Chairman has submitted a budget of $600 for 1985 which includes $300 for restoration. 3. A joint meeting of the Historical Commission, the Planning Board, the Chamber of Commerce, Helen Searing and officers of SIS to discuss. restoration of the building at 175 Main Street. 4. Emmy Clausing will write the Massachusetts Historical Commission in support of the extension of the Main Street District. 5. The Chairman will write the Mayor a letter of appreciation for the restoration of the turrets on City Hall. A preservation award fo this renovation will be given to the City Council in Preservation: Week. 6. If possible the presentation of awards in Preservation Week will be made in the renovated Round House Building. 7. Elizabeth Brabeck, the new reprsentative from Pioneer Valley Planning, outlined procedures for applications for grants and tax advantages on registered properties. Ex - officio: Brabeck, Brooks Historical Society: R. Wilbur 1. Minutes approved. 2. Bridge Street Cemetery: The Chairman reported that all the tombstones have been photographed by Ralph Levi. John Lee has offered to survey, catalogue, and map the grounds but has proceeded no further. The Chairman will write to Mr. Lee. 3. Court records: Mrs. Wilbur reported on the disposition of old court records from the Union Street Jail. According to law the State can- not give away court. records. A selection, 10% of Supreme Court cases, 5% of District Court cases, will be preserved and stored in Worcester. A selection is being made by David Propper. 4. Regional Planner: The Pioneer Valley Association may not .continue to fund the position of Regional Planner. In view of the great help we have had from Ann Tomasik and Elizabeth Brabeck, the Commission voted to instruct the Chairman to write a strong letter in support of con - tinuation of the position. 5. Round House Project: Curran Associates presented for approval designs for a roof vent for the elevator and canopies for the four entrance ways. The canopes.will not be structural additions to the building. 6. Preservation Week: The Commission will observe Preservation Week May 20 -27. The Award Ceremony will take place in the Round House. 7. Bridge Street Site: The Northampton Historical Society has petitioned the builders to increase the space between a proposed building and the Isaac Damon House. Respectfully submitted, Eleanor T. Bob Curran will offer tours of the building. There will be a press release preceding the ceremony, and a photographic piece on the awards will appear on the day of the ceremony. This is being done by Camilla Humphreys. The following buildings will receive awards: 1. The Round House (Bob Curran) for adaptive re –use, presented by Emmy Clausing. NOTE: This building will get an award this year only if completed. 2. City Hall (Playor Musante) for restoration of the crenel– lations, presented by Eleanor Lincoln. 3. Old School Commons for adaptive re –use, presented by Gordon Clark. 4. Eric Snoek and "Tex" Moser, commendations for editing and narrating, respectively, the walking tour tapes, presented by Ralph Gage. 5. Smith Admissions Office (Garrison Hall) for adaptive re -use, presented by Eleanor Lewis. 6. One Round '.douse Plaza, a new award for compatible design, presented by Lisa Reitzes. 7. Smith Glass Building, 32 Masonic Street, (Alan Scheinman) for adaptive re –use, presented by Tom Dyer. Also, commissioners are asked to vote by phone on a restored Cape on Nonotuck Street and on a painted Victorian on Harrison !!venue. Clark, Clausing, Dyer, Gage, Kiteley, Lewis, Lincoln, Stephens Exofficio: Bunnell, Brabeck, Brooks Absent: Bowman, C. Clark, Eliot, Reitzes 1. Depot restoration: The depot property was not included in the final draft of the Main Street District registration. The owners will proceed without need for further historic review. 2. The Commission voted to support an application to the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund for a matching grant of $25,000 to be used for basic repairs to the Academy of Music estimated to cost $50,000.. 3. The Fort Hill District: Application has been made by Emmy Clausing and Eleanor Lincoln for National Registry of six houses including the DAR House on South Street. 4. Historic Markers..— Money for historic markers is available through the City beautification fund. The Commission will prepare a list: of historic sites. 5. K eth Wilbur will be asked to suggest sources for the ;lplaques. 6. The function of the Design Review Committee was discussed. Dorothy Chapin will inquire. 7.
